Vision for a Vision Committee

Category: Church

Today I accepted a call to be on a committee that will decide how our church should go about “re-visioning” our vision statement. Whew, that’s a mindful. Why we have to put together a committee to decide how another committee will do its work is totally beyond me. But, then again, they DID ask me to be on this committee which is a good start seeing as how I don’t much like the way our church is going right now.

I was mulling it over in my head the day before I accepted the position thinking to myself we should just adopt the mission of Mosaic’s church and be done with it. I mean, it would save 6+ hours of meeting time.

But upon further evaluation I thought we should go a bit deeper. What we need to do is figure out what our core values are, strip away all the other crap and then wrap a new “look and feel” that matches a more postmodern generation’s needs. See, our church’s core values are pretty cool, I’m realizing. I mean, SOMETHING attracted me to this church 4 1/2 years ago, but it sure wasn’t the liturgy style. It must have been the other, less noticeable stuff—the core values.

If we asked the questions, and how I would answer them:

Are we effective in our neighborhood? Sort of.
Are we connected to our neighborhood? No.
Could I invite ANYONE to our church? No.
Are we a united, common voice to the world? No.
Are we overflowing with Grace? No.
Are we passionate? No.
Are we concerned with each other’s lives? Not really.
Do we overcome superficial behavior and are we sincere? No.
Are we a creative powerhouse? No.
Are we shaping culture? No.
Are we a “hospital for the sick?” Only when it’s convenient.
Are we a source of energy and life? No.
Are we growing? No.
Do we have a good understanding of the Jesus of the Bible? No.
Are we becoming & making Talmidim as Jesus commanded us to do? No.

Anyway, as you can see, I’d rather be in the 2nd, more hands on committee that will actually decide what the vision statement is!
