Spirituality in TV and Movies—Part IICategory:
Culture
I’ve been listening to the “Star Wars—Attack of the Clones” audio cds in my car on my way to and from work lately. It’s no secret that the Star Wars series is full of analogies and parallels to the spiritual world we are a part of. The “force” is split into two parts: the “dark side” and the “good side.” What surprised me today is that I was instructed spiritually from a conversation between Yoda and Mace Windu. They were discussing Anakin Skywalker (the not-yet Darth Vader) who is still a young apprentice Jedi (promoter of good in the universe) in this part of the series. They are wondering wether he will be the prophisied one to “bring balance to the force” because things are starting to turn for the worse in the Republic. Mace Windu poses the question, “will he be the /one/?” Yoda response with a simple and universal truth. “It depends on if he completes his destiny.” For a moment I was distracted by this statement. I immediately drew a parallel to my Christian life and pondered, “what is my destiny?” I realized that “destiny” for me meant “calling.” What is my calling? Could I potentially bring darkness to the world (the force) if I don’t follow my calling? Good or bad, I realized that some of my spiritual need is satisfied in popular media. I too have turned away from the church, towards another source for spiritual direction. Not that I have done away with church, but it has definitely been supplemented. Do you find yourself doing the same thing? Posted by pablohart on February 04, 2003 10:35 AM |

mmm... George Lucas a Buddhist he is. yes. And said once he that Stars Wars a good way to disseminate those beliefs it could be. mm..
I don't always (don't usually) find spiritual direction in the church I do always find it in the Church. Said another way: not at the building necessarily, but in the relationships with others walking in faith.
Interesting thoughts! It's often easy for me to follow the example of fellow Christians whom I admire without looking to the Text. While I think that discussing our faith is necessary for us as Christians (i'm doing it right now), I should probably be going to the Text first, then discussing what I should/can do about it with others. Obviously the Bible doesn't have specific answers for every situation, but it does give one a framework for discernment. But you're right, popular media is so much more alluring sometimes. ugh.
