Small Group ReportCategory:
Church
Two nights ago we met for our third time as a small group studying “postmodernism.” The class was once again energized and taking in every word that was said. I started off the class with a test of sorts with a TV in one corner playing a Lord of the Rings trailer (from the DVD) and in the other corner a computer playing a CD and displaying a screensaver to the beat of the music. Both of these items were loud enough that you could hear them in the lobby. (The idea came from a class my brother took.) The experiment was interesting because most of my attenders are modern thinkers. When asked later, none of them were very comfortable entering the room, and only one (the youngest in the class) was in tune with what both the TV and the computer were doing, but still admitted she wasn’t comfortable with it. We also talked about “peer to peer” and “open source” concepts and how they relate to the world as we know it and how they might have huge impact on our society. Everyone agreed that these concepts are indeed influencing business models, societel organization, and every day life. Many could think of examples where they didn’t understand technology that showed up in their lives. Do you have an example of how changes in technology have changed the way you do life? pretty much everything. except for sleeping. but even that is sometimes enhanced by medical technology in the form of sleep-inducing pills. so, pretty much everything. yeah, technology changes everything in my life.
mine, too.
for my business i use a sophisticated software program within my laptop that issues insurance policies never touched by a human hand (this software has won many awards and is even demonstrated as a display item at the smithsonian). also, all of my business correspondence is done by email and related attachments ('.doc's and '.xls' spreadsheets), and my business volume is tracked wkly, qtly, and ytd on a secure website.
technology also pervades my personal life, with online banking, buying, and 'blogging' to friends and relatives (including jpegs, sound and video files). haven't gotten into mp3 yet...would if i had time.
yeh, i'd say changes in technology have definitely changed my life.
...not only computer stuff. look at my heart condition. i am quite literally sustained by little white pills each day. they make my most central organ beat normally. the music i listen to. the food i eat. even the climate controlled air i breathe...
