Presentation on PostmodernismCategory:
Postmodernism
Tonight I make a presentation to the council at my church on the topic of technology, postmodernism, and the challenges many churches face today in providing a haven for today’s believer. I’m still working on this powerpoint presentation, but have it almost nailed down. (Some of the material comes straight out of a presentation by Mediated Spirit—excellent, by the way.) I’m a little nervous, but also excited to share what’s been on my heart for several months. It basically started with the release of my former pastors last summer. I was so intrigued as to what was going on at my church, and someone introduced “Carpe Manana” to me. The rest is a history of eating up as much as I can get my hands on concerning the topic, including “A New Kind of Christian” (highly recommended). Anyway, pray that I do this to advance the kingdom, not my own agenda. Don’t be selfish; don’t live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Pray we all recognize what’s happening in our society and turn to God for help as we face a new, uncharted era. Pray God uses christians everywhere to show what it really means to live for him. Pray for a fellow christian now. Posted by pablohart on March 12, 2003 09:28 AM |

So how did it go?
the presentation went well overall... i was pretty nervous leading up to it all day. i guess i was over-reacting a bit, cause they're not bad people--just a little intimidating at times. picture it: a group of about 30 people with the average age of about 45 sitting in the first few rows of our church's chairs in the sanctuary. the projector and laptop were set up like they would be if we used a projector in our church: on the big screen up front. the chairman of the elders happens to be the sound engineer too, so he gave me a cordless microphone. he introduced me very nicely. i pretty much read through the presentation as you see it here (in the post), with a few side comments. also, i was a little worried about using such language of comparing modern and postmodern so vividly in front of a largly modern crowd.
the presentation ended with applause which totally surprised me. a few people came up after and thanked me. two of them told me they wanted me to come over to their house to "help them" with their computers. one told me he has researched this topic a lot in light of education (he's in that field). and one, whom i respect deeply, and is scary bright, had some really great comments that reminded me that i really have no clue what all of this is about. he works with college students everyday and could probably out argue most people on the topics of theology, church, society, liberals, conservatives, gays, lesbians, media... you name it, he's got a paper on it in his back pack.
anyway, i'm very happy with how it came off in the end. i just hope it sticks. i think it will to some degree. as the chairman of the elders said as i finished, "we'll be dealing with this whether we want to or not, because it's coming..."
wow. cool.
