What is my calling?

Category: My Life

In seeking wisdom on the issues of postmodernism, someone passed this article on to me. I perked up when I saw it was from Os Guiness who has written several books including Time for Truth: Living Free in a World of Lies, Hype and Spin.

This particular article centers on his studies into the Christian “calling” vs. “vocation” and how they relate. I find that I’m confused as to what my calling is in relation to my vocation. Sometimes, there’s no doubt that my vocation is the right one, and sometimes, I struggle with it. I think I’ll always have that!

Calling, Postmodernism, and Chastened Liberals
A Conversation with Os Guinness

I have tried to set out a balance of the two. There is a primary call, which is by the Lord, to the Lord, for the Lord. And there is a secondary call, which is what we do as we follow the Lord-meaning, we do everything as unto him. And, of course, the secondary should never become the primary.

Do you clearly know what your calling is?

Os details this primary and secondary calling business in his book The Call. it's pretty good. my boss is really good friends with him in case you wanted some kind of direct contact, i might be able to get an email address or something.
