Stick to the Things We’re Good AtCategory:
Church
The other week I announced to the deacons that I was going to be stepping down from the role of “chair” of deacons in lieu of nurturing family ties. Stress has pushed me over the edge this past year and I had to make a hard decision to drop the position and in a way I feel like I’m letting the church down. I feel like there aren’t enough people to go around at our church which leaves gaps in leadership. We’re simply too thin to carry on all the things that need to be done in our church. As an example, we had to reduce the number of deacons and elders by 1 person because we simply ran out of people to ask. I mentioned this to someone at church who I had worked with in the financial area the past year. She made a comment that has stuck with me since she said it weeks ago. “Why don’t we all just pick the thing we’re good at and stick to that.” Immediately, I thought of the things I’m good at, and wondered if I shouldn’t just stick to those things and do them well. Things like music, media, social justice, and facilities. Turns out I’ll be picking up social justice committee leader and a facilities role in the coming year. She raises an interesting point that makes me wonder. Posted by pablohart on June 19, 2004 10:53 PM |

Yes! Yes! Do what you're good at. Emphasize your strengths, not your weaknesses. We are all given spiritual gifts, but not every gift. Can you imagine someone trying to speak in tounges without being given that gift? Or trying to move a mountain without having the faith to do it? There is no spiritual gift of finances that I am aware of but the principle still applies. Work in the area of your weaknesses, do what you don't like and it will kill your enthusiasm, drain your energy and burn you out. That's not life abundant. Follow your heart.
