CRC edges toward change on Mass stanceCategory:
Church
The Christian Reformed Church is the denomination to which I belong. This is welcome news for me… They did not quite take it back, but leaders of the Christian Reformed Church on Thursday took a first step toward revising or removing a centuries-old condemnation of the Roman Catholic Mass. But they stopped short of changing or deleting the language, instead asking for input from churches and ecumenical organizations before tackling the matter again in two years. Even that small step was welcome news for Mary Vaccaro, a pastoral associate at the Catholic Information Center who for years has been disturbed by the passage. “We’ve said we can no longer confess this,” said George Vandervelde, a Canadian theologian who helped prepare a study report. “That is some degree of disavowal. “Of course we disagree with them,” said the Rev. Scott Hoezee of Calvin CRC. “But the question is, are we sure we’re right when we damn them as idolators? Everything points to the fact that we are not at all sure.” Posted by pablohart on June 21, 2004 10:32 AM |
