Unknowledgeable Youth

Category: Church

I’ve been teaching sunday school for the high school class at our church the last several weeks. It’s been challenging and fun as I learn how to communicate with them. Most of the time, I’m not sure if I’m connecting with them because the looks on their faces generally don’t give me a clue as to what they’re thinking. I try to be honest with them, but it’s tough.

Yesterday we studied the passage in Revelation where John addresses the church in Laodicea. I was utterly shocked to learn that all eight of them had never heard of the (what I thought was infamous) verse about being hot or cold ( Revelation 3:15-16).

Not one of them knew it.

This article talks about the gap that youth have when it comes to knowing about the bible.

McDowell believes pluralistic postmodern culture makes it more important than ever that today’s youth be equipped with a thorough grounding in the biblical truth. This is imperative, he says, “because the world has come to us. We need to train our young people, more than ever, not only in what they believe but why they believe it and to see them experience it in their lives.

McDowell says contemporary research shows that accepting Christ and making a profession of faith today makes little or no difference in young people’s beliefs, attitudes, or behavior.

true, but these are west mi kids, entenched in the mecca of christianity. they (i included) easily become apathetic, which i personally think is a tougher issue to deal with than someone who doesn't know about the bible but is more than willing to learn.

Nate, I find your story about the unchurched lady interesting.

I was thinking about my own life and what I knew in highschool about this particular story. I remembered the first time I learned about Laodicea... it was in a song by Steve Camp on the record "Fire and Ice." His lyrics go something like:

I've been living Laodicea
And the fire that once burned bright
I've let it grow dim
And the very one I swore that I die for
Oh has been forgotten
And the world's become my friend

Great song for a teenager to have rolling around in his head. I just think it shows you how powerful Christian lyrics can be in CCM.
