Laughing

Category: Observations

Jesus laughing by Ralph KozakI like this picture. I first saw it in the house of one of my pastors growing up. It was the first time I had ever seen a depiction of Jesus laughing.

I didn’t grow up hearing people talk about the times when Jesus must have laughed with his followers. No one really talked about how there must have been times of joking around, or plain fun between the disciples and Jesus. What about when Jesus was growing up? I’m sure there were snickers and fun around dinner time.

I think I might buy a print of it. Anyone else want one while I’m ordering?

i show my Confirmation Class students 8 'images of' Jesus during one of our sessions, including medieval depictions, african, european, a computer-generated theory of what a 1st century palestinian would likely look like, and more. i end with this one. and then i have them close their eyes and envision a Jesus whom they have not seen in any image, and have them ask God to show them a glimpse of the essence of the risen Savior. then, what they describe is unique and fascinating.

Wow, Nate. I really like that exercise. Sounds like it would be quite informative! I do think it's good to think about Jesus/God laughing...and thinking about what that context might be.
